In writting a story, vocabulary is one of the most important thing a writter should pay attention on. The richer the vocabulary mastered, the more choices of diction to enhance the story.
In English, there are two most basic word structures that can help a writter to enrich diction: Nouns and Verb. In this post we are going to talk about the variety of Nouns.
1. Abstract of Nouns
Have you ever think about a 'thing' which you can't see or touch? Not a ghost or any supranatural creature. Abstarct noun is something exist that can't be experienced with 5 senses. Some of abstarct nouns are emotions or feelings, movements, ideas, and states. For example is the word 'Love' we can neither see nor touch love but we know what this thing is.
2. Concrete Nouns
This type of noun is the opposite of the first one. If abstract nouns can't be experienced by 5 senses, in contrass concrete nouns can be experienced by 5 sense. All of the things that we can see, touch, smell, hear, taste are concrete nouns. For instance, Food, parfume, milk.
3. Common Nouns
Some nouns whether abstract or concrete can be classified in to common nouns when they are named a person, place, or things generally.
For example the word mammal is a common nouns because it named generally any warm-blooded vertebrate animal which we know there are so many kind of animals included.
4. Proper Nouns
When the nouns, both abstract and concrete named any person, place, or thing specifically they are categorized as proper nouns. In writting, unlike the common nouns which are written uncapitalized, proper nouns always written capitalized.
Here is the example of proper nouns:
If I mention a word woman, it is general so woman is a common noun. But if I say J.K Rowling, the famous fantasy writter, who is also a woman. It is specifict, so the word J.K. Rowling counted as proper noun.
5. Collective Nouns.
When a noun represented a group of people, places, animals, or things it is called collective nouns.
Such words as a band of musician, a class of students, a murder of crows, a bouquet of flowers, a galaxy of stars are categorized as collective nouns.
These are not the only 'nouns' category that we are going to discuss. In the next part we stille have another type of nouns. See ya!
